I’m so glad to have found your substack. I have failed with gardens for years and I am determined to have a thriving garden! Can you reccomend some swoon worthy but realistic English garden accounts please? Like your but for the UK!? X

I saw another Australian grower who grew cold weather crops in your winter (I recognised them as UK early spring to early summer crops) like carrots and other roots, peas, broadbeans, sprouting broccolis. Could they work in your region? I get jealous of seeing what crops you can grow through your winter as it feels like we have so much less due to the minus temps we get and we had night time ones right up into first half of March.

The dream of an english garden on a non english weather also got to me...but we are on centrao Portugal so summer means no mercy heat for 3 months at least and of course no rain...I have to read your suggestions for less wimpy plants :) loving the idea of the potted bulbs table. We accidentaly have one pot with bulbs beacuse my daughter dug some out and hid them on a pot. The deed was only discovered once the bulbs emerged and it looked so good!

This afternoon I took a small gardening trowel and dug up loads of the Easter lily bulbs which are so big and growing so close together, they’re choking each other out. I had no idea there were so many in that part of our garden (they were here when we moved in 13 years ago & we haven’t killed them yet) - do they spawn little bulbs? Because there was like twenty in this little space ranging from as big as my thumb tip to ones that I could hardly get my hand around.

I spread them out a bit & planted a few in other parts of the garden that are bulb-less, hoping that I haven’t just killed all of them 😬
